Vegan Brand Silk Will Pay For Your Dairy-Free Drink on National Coffee Day
On National Coffee Day (September 29), vegan brand Silk—known for its milks, yogurts, and creamers—will pay for any coffee drink ordered with dairy-free milk. “For one brew-tiful day only, coffee drinkers will be able to send Silk a PayPal request (silknationalcoffeeday@gmail.com) for the cost of one dairy-free coffee drink (up to $5 in value) purchased at their local coffee shop, with their drink order in the notes section, and we’ll pay them back,” the company described its offer. Silk’s initiative is meant to reward customers who order plant-based milk instead of dairy, a move that sometimes results in an upcharge of up to $1 per drink at coffee shops.
This summer, animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a letter-writing campaign to encourage Starbucks to reconsider its policy of imposing an upcharge on drinks ordered with plant-based milks in place of dairy. The campaign urges customers to send a formal letter to Starbucks about the issue and more than 137,000 people have taken action to date. “By charging an additional fee for vegan milks, Starbucks is likely deterring some people from trying them in their drinks,” the letter reads, in part. “Everyone should be able to order non-dairy milk at no extra charge.”
